Star Rating: ★★★★

Review: Sobibor is a typical World War II movie based on the true story of the Jewish uprising at the Nazi German Sobibor extermination camp. The movie is so well done that it’s almost unnecessary to even read the subtitles to understanding what’s happening, but of course, that does help.

I am far from a history buff, but I did spend a lot of time with my uncle growing up, and he loves war movies, so I’ve seen more than a fair few. Still, Sobibor portrayed an event I was unfamiliar with, and was maybe a bit more graphic at showing it than the traditional American-made movie, both of which added to the intrigue.

However, while an incredibly well-done film, and a heart-breaking testament to the unrelenting will of the human spirit of the Jewish prisoners, as most Holocaust movies are, I found very little notably different from most similar movies. That being said, the Jewish prisoners themselves are the heroes of this event, there are no allied rescuers, which is an important story to be shared. Any World War II fan would indisputably enjoy this movie, and even those who only passively consume that type of film, like me, will also find something to like.
