AUTHOR

Tory L. Beaty

I am a 30 year old non-traditional college student  with a growing interest in film, television, books, or any other medium which encourages escapist fantasies away from our current cruddy reality... especially as the novel coronavirus continues to spread and restricts most of us from seeing our friends or traveling too much further than our local grocery stores.

So far, I've been to nine different countries (Canada, four European countries, three in the South Pacific, and South Korea) and have plans to go to many more, so being stuck back at home has definitely been a struggle for me, especially since that home belongs to my mom, and, again, I'm 30 years old.

Currently I'm in Rochester, NY, and a, now online, student at Syracuse University, with a major in Writing & Rhetoric. I'm a U.S. Army Veteran who was fortunate enough to be stationed abroad for a year (South Korea), but at the time, and even throughout all of my other travels,  I never really integrated myself in another culture- even those that were relatively similar to my own. Instead, I chose to spend my time in those amazing places, rich with their own histories and traditions, with people who came from the same place I did and viewed most things the same way as me, because broadening my horizons was difficult and scary, but I truly regret that.

I'm bored of the same old thing and ready to move forward, no matter how uncomfortable that may be. I'm ready to learn more and become an actual citizen of the world. Although I can't travel much right now, as most of us can't, and shouldn't, but we still have movies. I'm hoping by choosing to consciously change my media consumption to a more international perspective, I will be able to expand my viewpoints and gain a greater understanding of people from other regions and cultures. That way, when travel does reopen, I'm ready to take that leap.
